Tahoe Yacht Club's sailing program is filled with activities for all classes, from novices to "old salts." And for those who are "between boats," there are always plenty of crewing opportunities. Regattas are conducted under the US Sailing Association's Racing Rules of Sailing (R.R.S.) with Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) ratings applying to all keelboat events. The spirit of competition may be serious, but camaraderie and corinthian spirit prevail over all events held on the "Lake in the Sky."
Beer Can Regatta Series
This popular Wednesday evening keelboat series runs for 14 weeks from the week after Memorial Day until late August, with spring, summer and overall series trophies awarded at the "Beer Can Ball" finale for skippers, crew and mates.
The competition, as always, is both friendly and challenging with the Club's Race Committee committed to giving both spinnaker and cruising classes a race, regardless of size, speed or skill. If you'd like to join a crew, but don't have a boat, please contact TYC at 530-581-4700 and we can put your name on our bulletin board.
Laser Regatta Series
This growing class sets sail on Monday evenings at 6:00 p.m., off Lake Forest near the U.S. Coast Guard Station Tahoe. The Spring Series runs from Memorial Day for seven Mondays until mid-July; Summer Series goes another seven Mondays until late August. There are a total of 14 weeks of racing in both a spring and summer series with some Olympic competitors in the fleet. This is a great opportunity for the young at heart or strong of body to enjoy an organized regatta format with lots of fun, both on and off the water.
The season is capped by the annual Kip Lar Rieu Laser Fleet Championship, open to all sailors, to be held the Lake Forest Boat Ramp. This is a two-day event on the Saturday and Sunday following Labor Day. Whether you camp for the weekend or just show up for the day, this is a not-to-miss event.
