2007
Sailing and Boating Program
Coming off of a very successful season in 2006 has given the program a head start for this coming summer. The program enjoyed significant growth in both numbers and interest as well. Youth students in the sailing and safety programs totaled 275. Adult classes served 57 area residents in the learn to sail programs. Even with our short summers at Tahoe the programs covered 11 weeks of intensive sailing, boating safety activities. For information and registration, call: TCPUD at (530) 583-3796
The essence of this program is the community support and cooperation that we receive. Our community partners include the Tahoe Yacht Club, Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation, the Tahoe City Public Utility District and its Parks and Recreation Departments, who are our administrative partners, Obexer’s Marina where with the help and support of Sarah Obexer Fields, owner and Jimmy Lane, marina manager, our sailing education programs have found an excellent home.
Our other very important supporters include the California Department of Boating & Waterways whose boating safety grant program has provided the program with one of our 17’ Nomad sailboats, wetsuits and life jackets for the students and scholarships for low income students who could not otherwise afford to attend sailing classes, and training funds for our staff. Private foundation funding has been the salvation of TCS and continues to be the backbone of our continuing efforts to provide fun, educational and safe boating experiences to Tahoe area residents. Foundation support has come from our Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation, the Stout Foundation (Rich and Sue Stout), the Odyssey Foundation (Roberts Family) The ABM Charitable Trust (Dick & Kelsey Ferris) and the Truckee Tahoe Foundation. A number of individual donors have also helped over the years and is always most appreciated.
2007 plans include expansion of the Jr. Instructor program that was very successful and added to the learning experience of the students and the Jr. Instructors. In this program Jr. Instructors learn the basic elements of leadership, teaching sailing, boating safety and assist the instructor staff in every day teaching. These Jr. Volunteers have the opportunity to become certified US sailing Councilors and eventually fully certified US Sailing Instructors when they reach age 18.
In 2006, the Tahoe Community Sailing Team came of age with an expanded program that provided a fun, low intensity competitive program that emphasized sportsmanship, teamwork, enhanced learning and safety. The program in 2007 will continue to run on Monday evenings with the TYC Laser fleet races and on a number of Fridays through out the summer where advanced clinics provide an opportunity to learn and practice advanced skills. This program follows a “Double Goal” model of coaching where youth learn to be “winners in life” by making maximum effort, continuing to improve and refusing to let mistakes or adversity stop them. Our program seeks to develop mastery of the sport of sailing regardless of the regatta score, and to honor the sport of sailing through good sportsmanship and fair competition.
The classic example of the benefits of this concept of a community sailing program can be seen in the history of our T.Y.C. member families’ exemplified by Frank and Jean Roberts’ family. They began their sailing odyssey with a group of community friends in 1971; sailing their “Lone Star” and then later buying the hottest boat of the time, a Santa Cruz 27, named Outrageous, just before the National Championship Regatta at Tahoe in 1977. They have participated in sailing & boating activities at the T.Y.C. as a family for over 36 years. Their contributions to sailing and boating and to the T.Y.C. showcase the value of these community based programs.
For 2007, our major program goals are to maintain a high level of excellence in teaching sailing & boating, to raise funding for the purchase of a new safety boat to replace one of the safety boats that has been in service since the program began and is quite well used, and continue to provide the community with the opportunity to learn sailing the fun way at our wonderful Tahoe venue.
