NORTH TAHOE ROWING REGATTA
2011 NTRR Wrap-Up
The past couple of years, this regatta has had its share of weather excitement, so it was a real pleasure to have absolutely glassy conditions, shore to shore, with temperatures in the low 50s – heading for the high 60s. These are the Tahoe conditions that long-time race competitors have come to expect as the norm for the NTRR. To see for yourself what conditions were like, from the vantage point of the lead boat on the long course, see http://tinyurl.com/NTRR2011 (thank you Steve Sutter of Lake Merritt RC)
Thirty four boats entered – sixteen on the long 8.75nm course, eighteen on the shorter 3.75 course. Given the altitude (lake level is 6225 ft.) and distance – especially on the first leg of the long course – the field tends to stretch out significantly. This year, to heighten the competition, we compressed the starts, bringing as many boats to the starting line as safely possible – one start for the long course, two for the short course.
On both courses, the first place finishers put a lot of open water between themselves and their competition, but that didn’t stop a lot of competitiveness within the classes. Note some tight finish times in the women’s single categories on the long course. And for the first time in a couple of years, a course record was broken! The short course open water women’s double course record was broken by almost 3 minutes; another hundredth of a second and it would have been an even 3 minutes – congratulations to the South End team of Jessica Gammell and Vanessa Marlin.
We’re looking forward – already – to 2012.
